In the Making: Stories from ArtHouse Kentucky

A story begins...

At its core, ArtHouse Kentucky is a celebration of Kentucky artists - their works, their material, their processes, our communities — and the stories that live within each.

And every story begins somewhere.

In a studio. At a workbench. On a quiet morning when an idea first takes shape. Clay turned on the wheel. Glass gathered and blown. Wood carved, joined, and finished to reveal the character within the grain. Paint layered with intention. Light captured through the lens, held in a single, decisive moment.  A jewelry piece fashioned through patience, precision, and care. These are not objects of convenience, but of consideration—each one carrying a story of how it came to be.

The artists represented at ArtHouse Kentucky bring with them their own stories..their personal histories, influences, and ways of seeing. Their work reflects both tradition and evolution—honoring time-tested techniques while exploring new forms of expression. Within every piece is a narrative: of practice, of persistence, of a relationship between maker and material that unfolds and evolves over time.

And then, the story continues.

Because once a piece leaves the artist’s hands, it begins another life—within a home, a space, a moment. It becomes part of someone else’s story. A vessel used and passed down. A photograph that captures and holds memory. A piece of jewelry that adorns someone's body.

These layers of story are what give handmade work its depth.

And Those stories will be shared here.

ArtHouse Kentucky is proud to call Lexington's historic East End home—a neighborhood rich with cultural legacy and creative spirit. Just steps away stands the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center, an enduring symbol of Black artistry, performance, and community. This is also the neighborhood that gave rise to Isaac Burns Murphy, one of the most accomplished jockeys in American history. It is here, too, that Keeneland Association—the famed Kentucky race track—first took root, adding another layer to the deep and enduring story of this community.

Our gallery exists within a broader creative ecosystem—one that extends beyond our walls. Just nearby, The Artists’ Village offers a place for artists to own their homes, live, create, and share their work with the community via its Art Park, while The Artists’ Studios offer private, dedicated work spaces within a shared communal setting where ideas are developed, refined, and brought to life. Together, these spaces form a continuum—from process to presentation—where the story of the work unfolds in full.

And it is here where the idea of story extends beyond the walls of the gallery.

It lives in the streets, in the history, in he places, in the people who have shaped this place and continue to shape it today. To be part of this community is to be connected to something larger—an ongoing narrative of creativity, pride, history, resilience, and cultural significance.

In the Making is an extension of this belief.

This is where we will share the stories of the artists—what inspires them, what guides their hands, what keeps them returning to their work. It is where we will explore the stories within the objects themselves—the marks, the materials, the moments that define them. And it is where we will honor the story of our community—past and present, always evolving.

To live with handmade work is to live with story.

It is to surround yourself with objects that hold meaning, memory, and intention. It is a choice rooted not only in craftsmanship, but in connection—to the artist, to the material, and to the place it comes from.

We can't wait to share these stories with you.

We invite you to come along on the journey with us - to explore, to collect, and to become part of the story.
